Department of Sociology
Jan Doering is a Ph.D candidate in the Department of Sociology with interests in urban sociology, social psychology, the sociology of race and ethnicity, and qualitative methods. His dissertation focuses on culture and interaction in the context of grassroots public safety activism in diverse Chicago neighborhoods. As part of this work, he is currently preparing a comparative study of several neighborhood watch groups. He is also working on an analysis of the politics of interracial marriage among African Americans. Drawing on several hundred letters to the editor in African American newspapers, he is investigating how the issue of black-white intermarriage functioned as a site of racial identity formation.
